Sanibel Dreams
Dreaming of an Island paradise with pristine sand, beautiful shells
and warm ocean waters? Dream no more. Sanibel Island is a dream
island located on the SW coast of Florida. Due to its unique
east/west geography, it collects an abundant amount of shells from
the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Visitors come from all over the
world to view this island paradise, and to collect its shells for
friends back home. |
Many visitors are in search of the perfect shell. There are more
than eight varieties of shells to choose from. The best time to
shell is at low tide, the smaller shells are most often found at
the lighthouse end of Sanibel, and the larger ones nearer to
Captiva. Live shelling is protected by law. |

The Sanibel Lighthouse
The lighthouse stands on Point Ybel Light, as it is known by the
locals. The tower was requisitioned as early as 1833 and stands at
104 feet. The government declared the east end of the island a
lighthouse reservation and in 1884, the lighthouse was complete.
Now, it is a popular beach spot by locals and tourists alike.

J.N. "Ding Darling" Wildlife Refuge
Come and enjoy nature! The refuge is over 5,000 acres, and
consists of nearly 300 species of birds, alligators, otters and
many more Florida wildlife. The refuge is located on
Sanibel-Captiva road, and is approximately half the length of
Sanibel.

The Pirate Playhouse
Come and enjoy an evening out! The Playhouse will provide you a
night of entertainment with wonderfully done plays. The talented
actors come from across the country as well as Florida.

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum
The museum is a reference center for scientists and shell
enthusiasts alike. There are approximately 30 educational exhibits
displayed in the Great Hall of Shells.

Dining Out
There are plenty of wonderful restaurants to satisfy the
connoisseur in you. Some samples include Dolce Vita, Lighthouse
Cafe, Morgan's Forest, Traders, Matzaluna, Grandma Dots, The
Riviera, Timbers, Lazy Flamingo and The Jacaranda.

Golf Courses
Of course no Florida dream island would be complete without its
share of golf courses. Sanibel offers three beautiful courses:
Beach view, the Dunes, and Sanctuary. You will surely enjoy the
golf as much as the wildlife you will encounter. The Dunes is a
redesigned course that will flex your skills, but, lookout for
those critters! The back nine is part of a wildlife preserve
sanctioned by the Audubon Cooperative Society. The Sanctuary is a
private, flat terrain course that has water that comes in to play
on 16 of the holes. Enjoy the course's signature hole #4, which
displays a stunning view of the Gulf of Mexico.

Bike Paths
One of the most popular ways to tour the island is via
bicycles! There are 25 miles of paved bike paths that can lead you
to where you want to go. The bike paths will take you on
adventures through quiet neighborhoods, across wooden bridges, and
along water ways, while providing the comfort of shade, and the
peacefulness of the sounds of nature.
